The "Shan Gui" short film, part of the larger VR interactive theatre play project, blends traditional Chinese theatre aesthetics with modern machinery design, showcasing advanced digital animation technology to explore themes of isolation and cultural influence.

"Shan Gui" is a work in progress VR interactive theatre play that delves into the subtle, long-term influence of Chinese culture on feelings of shame and identity. Inspired by Qu Yuan's ancient poem "Shangui," the project combines traditional Chinese theatre aesthetics with modern cybernetic and organic structures. Divided into five sections—prologue, three acts, and finale—the VR experience immerses players in a living, breathing virtual theatre. Here, they will watch performances unfold while also interacting with NPCs and exploring the theatre’s intricate spaces. Though players can uncover hidden details and gain deeper insights, they cannot alter the story's progression, ensuring a cohesive narrative inspired by immersive theatre like "Sleep No More."

The accompanying 3D short film, also titled "Shan Gui," serves as a visual and thematic showcase for the VR project. This film reimagines the Mountain Spirit from Qu Yuan’s poem as an androgynous figure, merging traditional Chinese theatre visuals with modern machinery design. Created using Unreal Engine 5, the short film highlights our artistic and technical vision, demonstrating the potential of digital animation and interactive storytelling. It also introduces viewers to the narrative’s core themes of isolation, longing, and cultural influence.

The short film serves both as a promotional piece and a testament to our creative capabilities. Together, the VR experience and the short film aim to push the boundaries of VR technology, offering a deeply immersive and thought-provoking exploration of cultural identity and emotional experiences. Through this project, we seek to merge art and technology, creating a unique and engaging experience for players and viewers alike.
